Transit- oriented development to provide impetus to affordable housing

The Delhi Development Authority’s recent plan to develop areas around five metro stations in the capital as high- density mixed use developments under transit- oriented development, will turn out to be a big booster for affordable housing .

Five metro stations of Dwarka Sector 18, Dwarka sector 21, Mayur Vihar Extension, Mukundpur, Sarojini Nagar and INA combined have been selected for node- based transit- oriented development under the revised policy. It is an improvement over old policy of developing 500- metre corridor on either side of the metro line which was difficult to implement as all locations may not be viable for planning and development.

Says Pradeep Aggarwal, Chairman of Affordable Housing Council of Assocham and Founder and Chaitman of Signature Global, ” This is a positive policy development. Especially as it comes close on the heels of Centre’s decision to develop Regional Rapid Transit System corridors . This would provide a major connectivity boost to affordable housing “.
