The Centre’s move to involve National Building Construction Company (NBCC) to make use of the large chunks of idle land belonging to sick public sector units for constructing low cost units, will give a further push to affordable housing . Recently, the NITI Aayog in its strategy paper on India @75, had strongly recommended to make use of the land lying vacant with the public sector units for the purpose of building affordable housing units. This was in line with government’s flagship mission of ‘Housing for All by 2022’. NBCC which is working as the land management agency for 10 public sector enterprises of the central government, is currently working on detailed project report for 3-4 projects to be constructed on idle PSU land. And this state owned construction company is expected to start construction work in the coming fiscal. NBCC hopes to construct one lakh affordable housing units on this land. Says Pradeep Aggarwal, Chairman Signature Global and President of the Affordable Housing Council under Assocham, ” Affordable housing holds the key to the success of the Housing for All mission of the central government as the maximum shortage of housing is in this category. Considering this, the Centre’s move to utilise idle land of the PSUs by roping in NBCC to construct affordable dwelling units on this land is a laudable step. It will boost the supply of affordable housing”.
